The Math Behind Mobile Games: How to Guarantee LTV is Higher Than CPI
If you are pitching a mobile game to an investor, or if you are funding a studio yourself, nobody cares how cool the graphics are. They care about a single mathematical equation: Is your LTV greater than your CPI?
Mobile gaming is not an art business; it is a data acquisition business. If you can buy a user for $1.00 and extract $1.50 from them over their lifetime, you have a money-printing machine. If you buy them for $1.00 and they only spend $0.40, your studio will go bankrupt in a month.
Here is how elite technical architects build games specifically designed to win this mathematical war.
The Two Core Metrics: CPI and LTV
Before writing a single line of code, you must understand the financial pillars of your game:
- CPI (Cost Per Install): How much money you pay Facebook, TikTok, or AppLovin to get one user to download your game.
- LTV (Lifetime Value): The total amount of money that user will spend in your game (via ads or In-App Purchases) before they delete the app.
The Golden Rule: LTV > CPI.
If your LTV is $2.00 and your CPI is $1.00, you have achieved positive ROAS (Return on Ad Spend). You unlock your marketing budget and scale indefinitely.

Lowering your CPI is about removing friction. Every second a user waits, they bounce, and your CPI goes up.
1. Sub-50MB Initial Payloads
If a user clicks your TikTok ad and sees a 500MB download requirement, 60% of them will cancel the download. Elite engineers use aggressive code stripping, Texture Compression (ASTC/ETC2), and Addressables to ensure the initial download is under 50MB. The rest of the game downloads in the background while they play the tutorial.
2. Instant Play WebGL (HTML5)
Want a CPI of $0.05? Build your game for the web. By compiling your game to WebGL and hosting it on portals like GamePix or Poki, users click a link and are instantly playing your game in their browser. No App Store friction.
3. A/B Testing Gameplay Hooks
Your game must immediately deliver the experience promised in the ad. Using remote configuration (Firebase Remote Config), we can seamlessly change the first 30 seconds of the tutorial dynamically based on which ad the user clicked, instantly boosting conversion rates.

Once you buy the user, you have to extract value from them.
1. The Core Loop & D30 Retention
LTV is a function of retention. If they delete the game on Day 1, their LTV is zero. A strong game relies on a mathematically balanced "Core Loop" (Play -> Earn -> Upgrade -> Play).
